Recommended for ages 18+
In this talk, presented by Professor Alastair Blanshard, we’ll explore some of the vivid and intimate mythological stories of the Ancient Egyptians, including their depictions of divine sexuality and gender and how this influenced civilisation at the time. The talk will also embrace the representations of sexuality and gender of Egypt’s near neighbours, the Greeks and Romans, and will look at the legacy of these ancient civilisations on modern ideas about sex and gender.
About the presenter: Alastair Blanshard is the Paul Eliadis Professor of Classics and Ancient History and the Director of the Centre for Western Civilisation at the University of Queensland. He is the author of a number of books and articles about ancient myths as well as sexuality and gender in the ancient world.
